April 2018

Charlie don’t surf and we think he should,
Charlie don’t surf and you know that it ain’t no good.

This year started out with so much potential.    Multiple friends were charging, I was going to spend 17 days in Peru, and the thought of catching some amazing waves was leading to sleepless nights.   However it all got ruined by a kook cutting me off in El Segundo 5 weeks before I was leaving.    I was on a wave, when a girl dropped in on me.   Her board was about to hit me, so I grabbed it, and tried to shove it out of the way.   I tumbled around, came up out of the water, and my arm was hurting.    When the pain did not subside, I went to a doctor who told me the bad news.    I had torn my bicep tendon, was going to need surgery, and could not surf for the next 12 weeks.   To say I was disappointed was an under statement.   I considered canceling my trip, but with so many friends going, I decided to charge anyways.   Even if it meant being tortured by watching my friends catch some perfect waves.   In the end I had a great time.

Phil and Erwin after a Chicama session.

This year was also significant because of the large group going this year.    My brother Erwin joined me for the second consecutive year, and his 6th overall trip to Pacasmayo.

Tom, First timer Jeff, Bryan, and Dave

I can always count on the old reliables to make the trip again.   Tom joined us for his 5th trip, Dave came for his 5th trip, and Bryan charged also for his 3rd trip.  (Plane trouble in 2013 prevented him from having his 4th)    Jeff, a friend of my brother joined us this year for his first taste of Pacasmayo magic.

Nick, Peru’s finest, Tom,, Erwin, Joe, Peru’s finest, Denny

Lastly we had the rippers.    Joe, his brother Nick, and their good friend Denny joined us for their first trip to Pacasmayo.  Joe is a graphic artist, and made this amazing logo for our trip.   He also had the logo put on T-Shirts for everyone to wear.

I had been bugging Joe for years to join us, and this year he finally made it.   I was worried that I was hyping up the experience too much to him, but I think it lived up to expectations.   A big group overall, but we made it work, and a fun time was had by all.  Including me.
