El Faro Pacasmayo 15

Pacasmayo is real Peru. Great town, Great people, and Great waves. I love this place, and am jealous of the people who get to call it home. The town has so much charm. Just walking the streets is fun and getting a taste of the local culture cannot be beat. The market is always a fun adventure, with fruit that is so much larger than you find in the US, fresh caught fish, non refrigerated meat hanging on hooks, and the occasional live animal. This year Pacasmayo has shown a lot of growth from a year ago. There is more paved roads, a park overlooking the beach, and more businesses. I hope it keeps growing, but I don’t want it to lose it’s old time charm. Muy auténtico.

swelljune15Wave wise, we scored. A large swell began to hit while we were there. On the day before the others arrived, Tom and I had surfed El Faro. We had a Zodiac, but it was nowhere to be found. As I was paddling out, an Aussie told me it had been hit by a wave, and that is why it disappeared. It was not until I got back to the hotel, that Miguel showed me what had happened.

Day of Terror- 6-8-15

The day after our great Chicama run, we went out at El Faro. I had just caught a large wave, and getting into the Zodiac. Bryan helped me on board, and said “I love surfing and everything, but not enough to die for.” He had just gotten held under by a massive set. There was so much water moving around, that it was truly scary.   I got some of the biggest, and longest waves of my life. Dave had an amazing wave that had to be over two minutes long. When we got back to the hotel, Bryan called it “The day of terror” and that described it to a tee. While it may not be as giant as Mavericks, Teahupoo, Jaws, or Cortez bank, to this 50 year old, it was terrifying.
